To improve a low gradation expression ability by reducing the luminance of the first gradation to about 1.05cd/m2 of the intermediate luminance between the zeroth gradation and the second gradation at the time of driving a PDP. During a sustaining erasing period (P13) of a subfield (SF1) with the smallest luminance weight among a plurality of subfields (SF), a positive voltage (Vbk) that is smaller than a voltage (Vsus) applied during a sustaining period (P23) of other SF is applied to a scanning electrode. And also, during the sustaining erasing period (P13) of (SF1), a positive voltage (Vda) is applied to an address electrode or a positive voltage (Vda) is applied to an address electrode during at least one period of an electric potential increasing period (T11) of an all-cell initializing period (P11).
