The present invention relates to hyper-branched amylopectin and derivatives thereof, for use in the surgical and therapeutical treatment in mammals or for diagnosis methods, especially for use as plasma volume expander. The hyper-branched amylopectin shows a medium branching level between > 10 and 25 moles % and an average gravimetric molecular mass within the range 40000 up to 800000 Dalton.
