A process for preparation of iso-olefin copolymers is carried out in the presence of Zr- and/or Hf halides and polymerization is in the presence of organic acid halides. Independent claims are included for: (1) a mixture of Zr halogens and/or Hf halogens and a compound of formula (I); (2) a polymer prepared as above; and (3) a shaped part containing the above polymer. R-COX (I) R = 1-18C alkyl, 3-18C cycloalkyl, or 6-24C cycloaryl; and X = F,Cl, Br, or I.
