Improvements in surgical dressings

A surgical dressing incorporates a composite X-ray tell-tale comprising an externally smooth X-ray opaque flexible strand covered with another strand to render its surface less smooth. A yarn or thread of natural or synthetic fibres is wound, twisted, braided or knitted round an element made of an elastomer loaded with 60-70% of barium, strantium, thorium, lead or tungsten or non-toxic compounds thereof. The tell-tale is applied to gauze by interweaving or using an adhesive. The gauze is cut and folded to form the dressing, the cut ends of the gauze and the tell-tale being tucked in the folds.
