A document transport assembly is provided for conveying a document through a document handling machine along a transport plane in a transport direction. The assembly comprising a first sub-assembly adapted to guide a first portion of the document and a second sub-assembly adapted to simultaneously guide a second portion of the document, the first and second sub-assemblies being disposed alongside one another in a direction in the transport plane substantially perpendicular to the transport direction. At least one of the first and second sub-assemblies comprises a drive member for conveying the document in the transport direction. Each of the first and second sub-assemblies comprises support members for supporting the respective portion of the document thereon, and at least the first sub- assembly comprising urging means arranged to urge the first portion of the document towards the transport plane independently of the second sub-assembly, such that a surface of the document, spanning the first and second portions of the document, is maintained substantially flat and in the transport plane.
