MULTI-MODE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize the fact that a multi-mode wireless communication system is available through various different communication services.

SOLUTION: The multi-mode wireless communication system exists in a wireless telephone network which provides an additional service to a selected client group while satisfying the request of general clients. The system uses a handset which performs switching between a standard portable wireless telephone operation mode, and an enhanced cordless mode when the handset is located in the range of a pico-cell 26 interconnected with a public switched telephone network 20. Each pico-cell 26 is controlled through the framework of an overlay cell 10b operating independently from the wireless telephone network and using a unique control protocol in a small number of reserved cellular phone channels.
