PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable compression ratio internal combustion engine capable of smoothly performing relative movement of a cylinder block and crankcase. SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine (1) is equipped with a cylinder block (2), a crankcase (4) and a moving mechanism (5). The crankcase (4) is provided with a cylindrical frame (41). The cylinder block (2) is accommodated in the frame (41) in a state that the outer wall surface (20a) of the cylinder block (2) and the inner wall surface (41a1) of the frame (41) press to each other. The internal combustion engine (1) includes a lubricated sliding mechanism (60), which forces the cylinder block (2) and frame (41) to slide in a lubricated state when the moving mechanism (5) relatively slides along a cylinder center axis (CCA) of the cylinder block (2) and crankcase (4).
