PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection liquid crystal display device with a simple structure which prevents etendue from increasing and can supply large current of a short-time rating or over to a solid light source. SOLUTION: The projection liquid crystal display device includes a first LED light source 2a and a second LED light source 2b that conduct time-sharing drive alternately, a polarization split element 10 that combines and projects a light flux projected from each of a first lens group 7a and a second lens group 7b on the same light path, illumination optics 4 equipped with a liquid crystal element 11 that turns the light flux projected from the polarization split element 10 into a linearly polarized beam of the same polarization direction, and a projection optics 5 that projects the light flux projected from the illumination optics 4 to a screen 6. The liquid crystal element 11 projects the linearly polarized beam in the same polarization direction at all times by synchronizing with the time-sharing drive of the first LED light source 2a and the second LED light source 2b and changing the polarization direction alternately.
