<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor device which functions so as to emit or absorb short-wavelength light. <P>SOLUTION: High-purity molybdenum oxide is used for the principal parts of the optical semiconductor device. The high-purity molybdenum oxide is used in the light-emitting region or the absorption region of the optical semiconductor device.
