PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image forming apparatus, capable of preventing the generation of lines while automatically adjusting density of pixels causing generation of lines due to dust, etc., by simple configuration. SOLUTION: The image reader has: an original conveyance part; an image reading part which starts reading by starting of conveyance of an original; a conversion part which converts an output signal of the image reading part into a digital signal; a first memory which stores density data of pixels for one line, and is sequentially updated in accordance with the reading; a second memory which stores the read density data of the pixels for one initial line; and a comparison operation part 9 which compares between pieces of the density data of the first memory and the second memory per line, wherein the comparison operation part 9 outputs the density data of the pixels of the first memory for the pixels as the reading results of the original when the density of the first memory is higher than that of the second memory more than a threshold, and outputs density data of white to the pixels as the reading results of the original when the density of the first memory is not higher than that of the second memory more than the threshold.
