PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a device to be controlled to automatically select its own sub-unit and/or a sub-category by confirming, when a plurality of control devices is present in IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) 1394 system, whether sub-units and/or sub-categories mounted on the own device are mounted on the control devices or not. SOLUTION: The device to be controlled 200 records mounting states of sub-units or sub-categories of all control devices 100-104 connected onto an IEEE 1394 serial bus 300 by successively selecting a plurality of sub-units or sub-categories mounted on the own device to confirm whether the selected sub-unit or sub-category can receive a corresponding command from each control device 100-104. The device to be controlled selects a sub-unit or sub-category largest in terms of the number of control devices mounted therewith from the sub-units or sub-categories owned by the device to be controlled, and executes it as an own function of the device to be controlled.
