PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte for an electric double layer capacitor that has a superior impregnation properties to an electrode and a separator, shows a low viscosity coefficient, high electric conductivity, and a wide potential window, and has excellent electrochemical stability, and to provide the electric double layer capacitor that has high capacity, low internal resistance and a small leakage current and also has superior life characteristics and self-discharge characteristics by using the electrolyte. SOLUTION: A compound shown by formula (1) is added to the electrolyte for the electric double layer capacitor containing quaternary ammonium salt as the electrolyte in a solvent.
