The invention relates to condition monitoring of electric machines (10). In order to accomplish a cost-effective mechanism enabling efficient retrospective analyses, data received from a plurality machine sensors (12) is provided with time-stamps and stored in the memory (14) of the machine (10). If a need for an analysis of the condition of the machine (10) is detected, stored data originated from a particular set of sensors (12) is transmitted through a communications network (16) to a remote supervisory unit (19a, 19b) that performs the analysis. The particular set typically depends on the event that indicates the need for the analysis.
