With reference to Figure 1, the present invention relates to a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine with cylinder de-activation. More specifically, the invention relates to a multi-cylinder engine which has its cylinders (1-6 and 7-12) arranged in a plurality of banks (11, 12) and in which the cylinders in at least one bank (11) can be de-activated whilst the cylinders (12) in one or more of the other banks remain active. A coolant circuit is provided which can supply coolant either in parallel through both banks (11, 12) separately or in series through both banks (11, 12) sequentially. In parallel operation part of the coolant flow from a first bank (12) passes through the second bank (11) and part flows through a heated circuit (18) bank to a pump (13).
