917,461. Nuclear fuel elements. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. June 14, 1960 [June 19, 1959], No. 20921/60. Class 39 (4). A nuclear fuel element comprises a tubular metallic casing 2 sealed at both ends with caps 7, 8, a tube 4 of ceramic material, and nuclear fuel 3 between the tube 4 and the casing 2. The fuel may be uranium dioxide in the form of ring- shaped bodies. The tube 4 and separators 9, 10 may be of magnesium oxide, a clearance 11 being left to allow for expansion. If the tube 4 is of porous material, gaseous fission products diffuse into space 1; this space is filled with helium which penetrates into voids in the fuel to improve heat transfer. |
