<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method for the design and construction of a spectacle lens for the correction of human vision, including the correction of high order aberrations. <P>SOLUTION: Corrective measures 34 are applied based on data obtained from high order wave front measurements 30 of the subject's eye. According to one method, the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of the overall eye and lens optical system is optimized. According to another method, the optimization is performed on the wavefront of the overall eye and lens optical system. Both methods use weighted functions 35 in the optimization procedure. This method of high order aberration correction is also applicable for the design of contact lenses and intra-ocular lenses, and for the execution of refractive eye surgery.
