PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon molecular sieve which is obtained by carbonizing a phenol resin and the pore size of pores of the sieve is controlled so that the carbon molecular sieve exhibits selective adsorptivity to CO<SB>2</SB>and to provide a method for producing the carbon molecular sieve. SOLUTION: The carbon molecular sieve adsorbs CO<SB>2</SB>selectively, has pores whose pore size is controlled and is obtained by carbonizing the phenol resin synthesized from phenols and aldehydes.
