A machine translation system enabling efficient reflection of the results of translated word unification even when the user is editing the result of translation by manually and directly inputting characters. The machine translation system comprises a machine translation unit, an original sentence/translated sentence storage unit, translated word unification units, a translation correspondence relation judging unit, and a translated word unification control unit. The machine translation unit translates a first language to a second language. The original sentence/translated sentence storage unit stores an original sentence written in the first language and its translated sentence written in the second language and associated with the original sentence word by word. The translated word unification units execute different translated word unifications to unify the translated words corresponding to the words in the original sentence word by word. The translation correspondence relation judging unit judges whether or not there is a translation relation between a specific word string in the original sentence stored in the original sentence/translated sentence storage unit and a specific word string in its translated sentence. The translated word unification control unit receives a set of word strings in the first language and word strings in the second language as a translated word unification request, selects a predetermined translated word unification from among the translated word unifications according to the result of the judgment by the translation correspondence relation judging unit, and controls the translated word unification units to execute the selected translated word unification.
