The invention relates to a microporous membrane having suitable permeability, mechanical strength, electrolytic solution absorption characteristics, compression resistance, and heat shrinkage resistance; and methods for producing and using such a microporous polyolefin membrane. It also relates to battery separators comprising such a microporous polyolefin membrane, and to batteries utilizing such battery separators.
