PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance restartability of a diesel engine automatically stopped, while improving fuel economy as much as possible. SOLUTION: Propriety of autoignition is determined in a stop time compression stroke cylinder which is in a compression stroke at engine stopping. In fulfillment of a restarting condition, when autoignition in the stop time compression stroke cylinder is proper, first fuel is injected into the stop time compression stroke cylinder, and when autoignition is improper, first fuel is injected to a stope time intake stroke cylinder which is in an intake stroke at engine stopping. In a case where fuel injection control is performed in the stop time compression stroke cylinder, restarting can be attained with a driving time of a starter motor 34 shortened as short as possible.
