PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of performing such color reproduction that colors are matched even if an observation light source is changed, by realizing a color reproducing system capable of approximately matching an input document and the quantity of color material to be blended. SOLUTION: A color correcting section 13 is adapted to perform processing for converting multi-band data on which spatial filter processing has been performed by a filter processing section 12, into chrominance signals for a color image output device 3. In the color correcting section 13, the quantity of color material in a document is estimated from chrominance signals read in a multi-band, thereby achieving color reproduction faithful to the document. Since CMYK signals output from the color correcting section 13 have luminance linear characteristics, in an output gradation correcting section 14, gamma correction is applied in such a way as to meet characteristics of an output device, and a halftone processing section 15 converts a multi-level image signal on which gamma correction has been performed, into data of such a gradation level as to be stably output by the output device.
