PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base region detecting method capable of detecting and eliminating a base region from image data with high accuracy, an image processor, an image forming apparatus, a computer program and a recording medium. SOLUTION: A region separation processing part 24 of the image processor 20 detects edges of image data input from an image input device 11. A base detection processing part 25 has a plurality of counters for creating histogram, switches the counters in accordance with an edge detection result in each prescribed region of the image data to count the number of pixels in each density value, extracts a base density candidate value at which a count value becomes a maximum in each prescribed region, determines the existence/absence of a base region and a base density value compared with a threshold, and extracts a base region from the image data in accordance with whether pixels of the base density value continue. A base region elimination processing part 26 eliminates the base region from the image data in accordance with a detection result from the base region detection processing part 25.
