PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detecting device, capable of performing recognition of object information while suppressing the enlargement of the device, and an imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: The focus detecting device comprises a light receiving means 247 including a plurality of two-dimensionally aligned photoelectric conversion elements 247a, and receiving a pair of luminous fluxes B1 and B2 passing through different areas of the pupil of an imaging optical system 311; a focus detecting means 254 detecting a focus adjusting state of the imaging optical system 311 based on images by the pair of luminous fluxes B1 and B2; and an analysis means 252 analyzing an image by one of the pair of luminous fluxes.
