PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the linear displacement detecting accuracy for a control shaft 11 of a variable valve train 6 of an internal combustion engine (an in-line 4-cylinder engine). SOLUTION: A bearing 12 for releasing rocking of the control shaft 11 is installed between a sensor rod 13 and the control shaft 11 of the variable valve train 6. Thus, torsion of a sensor lever 14 rotating round the shaft center of the sensor rotor 15 is eliminated so that a linear displacement measuring error for the control shaft 11 can be reduced. Further, a linear rotation displacement converting mechanism for converting linear displacement of the control shaft 11 to rotational displacement is divided into a sensor rod 13 and a sensor lever 14. Thus, distortion caused in converting the linear displacement of the control shaft 11 to the rotational displacement of the sensor lever 14 and the sensor rotor 15 can be absorbed so that the linear displacement detecting accuracy for the control shaft 11 can be improved.
