A valve (10) and method are provided for inhibiting spillage when filling a bottle (14). The method includes lifting the bottle (14) so that a spout (42) of the valve passes into the opening (44) of the bottle (14) with a slight clearance. The valve (10) is opened by lifting the bottle (14) and the bottle (14) is filled under gravity and is vented through a discharge passage (24) and vent passage (22) in the spout (42). The valve (10) is closed by lowering the bottle and when the bottle (14) is removed from the spout (42), gas is allowed to escape from the bottle (14) via the clearance between the spout (42) and the opening (44), but the escape of gas is throttled by the clearance, to inhibit spillage that could result if the pressure in the bottle (14) is allowed to reduce rapidly.
