Ethylene is polymerised in the presence of a catalyst comprising a finely divided titanium monoxide having a freely exposed surface, e.g. one obtained by ball milling titanium monoxide in contact with ethylene. The polymerisation may be effected in bulk or in the presence of an inert diluent or solvent such as hexane, heptane, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene, xylene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, or chlorbenzene. The polymerisation is preferably effected in a stainless steel vibratory ball mill. The polyethylene is purified by leaching with a 50:50 mixture of n-butanol and 48% hydrofluoric acid and subsequently washing the polymer with water and ethanol.
