The method involves detecting markers (12a-12c) of an instrument or a patient by a medical marker tracking system (1) e.g. charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor system. Actual characteristics of the markers are compared with reference characteristics by a data processing unit (5) and the comparison result is provided to the markers. The reference characteristics as marker base characteristics are stored in a storage that is attached to the data processing unit. A brightness control of the markers is held over a pixel range of a marker image, which is recorded by a video-image recording unit.
