A belt sander protection mechanism comprising: a housing having a sidewall and a topwall joined to the sidewall, the topwall having a slot formed therein that is proximate to a surface of the sidewall; a wear plate having a first end positioned within the slot and maintained against the sidewall; and a tracking box fastened to the housing and trapping a second end of the wear plate between the tracking box and the surface of the sidewall.
