An apparatus to diagnose defect of smoothing electrolytic condenser and method thereof are provided to accurately diagnose the malfunction according to the deterioration of the smoothing electrolytic condenser by estimating the ESR value of the smoothing electrolytic condenser and C(Capacitance) value from the inverter direct current voltage and motor phase current. The voltage detecting portion detects the inverter(30) direct current voltage when the motor(32) stops. The current detector(34) detects the motor phase current when the motor stops. By estimating the ESR value of the electrolhsis condenser(24) for smoothing from the inverter direct current voltage and the detected motor phase current, the controller(36) diagnoses the malfunction of the electrolhsis condenser for smoothing. The display unit(38) indicates the fault daignostics of the smoothing electrolytic condenser.
