A plasma display apparatus and an image processing method thereof are provided to improve image quality by reducing a false contour noise. A sub field mapping unit(200) maps pixel data including the gradation value of each pixel to a preset sub field and outputs the mapped result to image data. A gradation size extracting unit(210) extracts the size of the gradation in each pixel data. A compensation intensity determining unit(230) outputs the compensation intensity for determining a compensation value and includes a memory(220). The memory stores the gradation size of each pixel data in a line unit to grasp the gradation size of adjacent pixel data when determining the compensation intensity. A controller determines the compensation value according to the compensation intensity and the gradation size of each pixel data and randomly adds and subtracts the compensation value to and from the image data outputted in the sub field mapping unit. A data alignment unit supplies the compensated image data to a data driver supplying a driving signal to a plasma display panel. |
