A refrigerator and a control method thereof are provided to keep the vegetables stored in the vegetable container fresh and reduce the destruction of the nutrient by suppressing breathing of the vegetables while helping photosynthesis. A refrigerator comprises a vegetable container(10) in which vegetables are stored, a temperature sensing unit which is provided in the vegetable container and detects the temperature of the vegetable container, one or more light emitting diodes(110,120,130) emitting at least blue light according to temperature information of the temperature sensing unit, and a controller controlling on/off of the light emitting diodes. The light emitting diodes emit the blue light until the temperature sensed by the temperature sensing unit reaches the reference temperature, and then emits white and green light.
