Disclosed is a novel path for the flow channel in a PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell collector-diffuser. The path is characterised in that it is spiral shaped. The collector-diffuser comprises a flow channel and a plurality of orifices for the inlet and/or outlet of gas, said orifices may be located at any point lengthwise the channel path. The purpose of using a simple spiral-shaped path in the flow channel is to remove 90°ree; twists in order to avoid gas accumulation zones, the gas stored within a fuel cell provoking the membrane to be flooded and the amount of produced current reduced. The removal of 90°ree; twists also avoids large pressure loses that cause said type of direction changes. In addition, the use of a single channel intends to improve the distribution of reactant gases within the fuel cell. The use of a channel for the elimination of gases resulting from the reaction promotes that the elimination mechanism be, in a great extent, dependant on the thrust of the momentu m transference. The collector-diffuser is mounted in a system specially designed for constructing a PEM fuel cell. The cell described herein showed a performance higher than that of a commercial cell. |
