[PROBLEMS] To provide catalysts for olefin polymerization which are excellent in olefin polymerization performance and can give polyolefins having excellent properties. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] Catalysts for the polymerization of olefins, characterized by comprising (A) a transition metal compound represented by the general formula (I) and (B) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of (B-1) organometallic compounds, (B-2) organoaluminum oxy compounds, and (B-3) compounds capable of reacting with the compound (A) to form an ion pair: (I) wherein M is a transition metal atom selected from among Group 4-6 metals of the periodic table; two of Rpos="post">1 to Rpos="post">4 which are adjacent to each other and the carbon atoms to which the two are bonded are united to form a ring; the others of Rpos="post">1 to Rpos="post"> 4, Rpos="post">5 to Rpos="post">8, and X are each an atom or a group selected from among hydrogen, halogeno, hydrocarbon groups, halogenated hydrocarbon groups, oxygen-containing groups, and nitrogen-containing groups; Q is-O-,-S-,-NRpos="post">a-, or-PRpos="post">b-(wherein Rpos="post">a and Rpos="post">b are each hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group); Y is a neutral ligand having an electron-donating group; m is a number satisfying the valence of M; and n is an integer of 0 to 3.
