An apparatus and a method for controlling an operation of a mobile terminal are provided to select or set a specific function through a natural user action instead of a physical button or a GUI(Graphic User Interface). A sensor unit has a plurality of touch sensors. The plurality of touch sensors is installed at an external surface of a portable terminal. The plurality of touch sensors senses that a user grips the portable terminal. A signal processing unit(11) measures a pressure change or a contact area change sensed by the touch sensors. A recognizing unit(12) grasps a function corresponding to the measured pressure change or contact area change based on data stored in a storage unit(15). A controller(14) controls an operation according to the function grasped in the recognizing unit.
