PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system in which an external authentication apparatus authenticates the eligibility of a user of an image processor such as an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: In the authentication system 1, the external authentication apparatus 20 for authenticating the user of the image forming apparatus 10 is eligible or not by using a private line 3 between the image forming apparatus 10 and the external authentication apparatus 20 transmits an abnormality inspection request to an image forming apparatus 10 through a LAN 2 different from the private line 3, the external authentication apparatus 20 and the image forming apparatus 10 execute abnormality inspections of communication through the private line 3 by using respective independent transmitting software and receiving software, and the external authentication apparatus 20 discriminates the presence/absence of abnormality in communication between the external authentication apparatus 20 and the image forming apparatus 10 through the private line 3 on the basis of the results of the abnormality inspections.
