PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that when a non-magnetic layer is increased to decrease a squareness ratio S, a saturated magnetic field Hs is increased and current response characteristics of a perpendicular magnetic recording head are decreased, and, when a film thickness of a FeCo ferromagnetic layer is decreased to decrease the squareness ratio S, overwrite characteristics deteriorate, while a multilayer film with the FeCo ferromagnetic layer and non-magnetic layer laminated is used conventionally as a main pole to prevent erasure after recording and a ferromagnetic layer is coupled antiferromagnetically to reduce residual magnetization and reduce the squareness ratio S. SOLUTION: In the main pole 2 of the perpendicular magnetic recording head 1, an NiFe soft magnetic layer 24 is inserted into the FeCo ferromagnetic layer 22. By inserting the NiFe soft magnetic layer 24 at a position 1 to 7 nm apart from the non-magnetic layer 26, it is possible to reduce the residual magnetization Mr without changing the number of non-magnetic layers 26 and the layer thickness of the FeCo ferromagnetic layer 22, and significantly reduce the squareness ratio S.
