A brush and holder system, comprising (i) a brush having bristles at one end and a handle at the other; (ii) a container for housing at least the bristles of the brush; (iii) a lid for the container; wherein the lid has a handle to assist its removal from the container, (iv) a locking mechanism by which the brush may be releasably locked inside the container; and (v) a release mechanism comprising a button, lever or other form of switch provided on the lid handle capable of acting on the locking mechanism so as to release the brush from the container only on the application to the locking mechanism of forces acting in two different directions.
