The device (10) has a drive belt (16) driven by a driving belt pulley (14) for driving a driven belt pulley (18) provided on a compressor side. A clutch (20) is provided for selective drivable coupling and decoupling of a compressor input shaft with the pulley (18). Another driven belt pulley (22) is driven by the belt, and is coupled with the compressor input shaft or is decoupled from the compressor input shaft by another clutch (24). The pulley (22) is coupled/decoupled with/from an intermediate pulley (26) by the clutch (24). An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a device for driving a cooling compressor in a motor vehicle i.e. commercial vehicle.
