PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the fixing quantity of heat by adjusting the nip amount according to the toner amount of the image to be fixed. SOLUTION: In steps S1, S3, S8, whether image data to be read are monochrome or colored is set by automatic selection or manual operation. When the read image data are monochrome or they are set in a monochrome mode, it proceeds to step S4. In the case they are monochrome, since the number of toner images is small, paper is passed in steps S5-S7 while controlling the nip amount for generating a small supply quantity of heat Q1 for fixation. When the read image data are colored, or they are set in a color mode, it proceeds to step S9. Since the number of toner images is large in the color mode, paper is passed in steps S10-S12 while controlling the nip amount for generation a large supply quantity of heat Q2 for fixation.
