PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of performing a satisfactory color shift correction by suppressing variation in a second direction in terms of positions of latent images formed by different light emitting element groups. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises: an image forming part which forms the latent image on the surface of a latent image carrier moving in the second direction by a line head provided with a plurality of light emitting elements grouped by every light emitting element group, and performs registration mark forming operation that operation to transfer the registration mark obtained by developing the latent image to a transfer medium is performed for a plurality of colors; a correction means which performs the color shift correction based on the registration mark formed by the registration mark forming operation; and a control means which controls the registration mark forming operation by the image forming part. The control means allows the image forming part to perform the registration mark forming operation after adjusting the light emitting timing of the plurality of light emitting elements so that the positions in the second direction of the latent images formed by the respective light emitting element groups may be aligned with each other.
