PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which can sufficiently cool a metal strip S and can prevent facilities around the outlet side of an annealing furnace from burning out, even when the metal strip S cannot surely have such a length in the inside of a soaking area and the inside of a cooling zone as to sufficiently cool the metal strip S after having been annealed in a continuous annealing line. SOLUTION: The method for controlling the transportation speed of the metal strip includes: controlling a temperature distribution in a width direction of the metal strip S by spraying a cooling gas toward the metal strip S through a plurality of chambers 3 arranged in the width direction of the metal strip S in the cooling zone of the annealing furnace; and also controlling the transportation speed of the metal strip S so that the temperature of the metal strip S in the outlet side of the annealing furnace reaches a temperature at which the facilities around the outlet side of the annealing furnace can be prevented from burning out.
