The method involves opening and/or switching off a switching element e.g. clutch and brake, of an automatic transmission during switching from an actual gear into a target-gear. The switching element of the transmission is closed and/or switched on. Main intervention (7) to an engine torque (M) is carried out by a drive assembly to achieve a target-speed at the target-gear from actual-speed at the actual-gear. The element is controlled with a pressure step (6) during the switching. A pre-intervention (8) to the engine torque is carried out before the main intervention by the drive assembly.
