The device (1) has a heating element e.g. strip heat conductor, for heating food to be cooked in a cooking chamber (11) and separated from the chamber by a glass ceramic plate. A main heating zone (2) is formed by a main heating element, where the heating zone represents ellipse with a major axis, which is larger than a minor axis. The major axis of the ellipse of the heating zone lies in a width direction of the cooking device and represents half the width of the chamber. The heating zone is formed in a wall, and represents a base (113) and/or a cover (112) of the cooking chamber.
