In a packaging component which is shaped from plastic and has an inorganic barrier layer with a good barrier action against the passage of water vapor and gases, the packaging component is provided with a coating which is obtained under reduced pressure with materials having the desired barrier action against passage. The vacuum coating is overcoated for protection against abrasion and corrosion, and for improvement of mechanical stability.
