PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a heterocyclic compound, particularly, to provide a new method for production by which the heterocyclic compound can simply and inexpensively be produced in high yield in a small number of steps with good productivity by a one-stage reaction using a carboxylic acid or esters thereof and guanidines as raw materials. SOLUTION: The carboxylic acid represented by general formula [I]: R<SP>1</SP>-COOR<SP>2</SP>or the esters thereof is reacted with the guanidines (wherein, X is NH) or semicarbazides (wherein, X is S or O) represented by general formula [II]: R<SP>3</SP>-NH-N(-R<SP>4</SP>)-C(=X)-NH-R<SP>5</SP>, to obtain the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound represented by any of general formula [III].
