PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate large friction force between rollers and a guide rail by small pressing force, and to increase driving force for hoisting/lowering a car. SOLUTION: The self-propelled elevator comprises the guide rail 10 with a generally T-shaped cross section extending in a hoistway H, and having a bottom plate 11 and a vertical plate 13; the car 1 hoisted/lowered along the guide rail 10; the pair of rollers 3b provided on the car 1 and clipping the guide rail 10; and a pressing portion 8b pressing the rollers 3b on the guide rail 10. The vertical plate 13 of the guide rail 10 has at least two tilting surfaces 13b tilting with respect to a main surface 13a of the vertical plate 13. The pair of rollers 3b is pressed in a direction orthogonal to the pair of tilting surfaces 13b of the guide rail 10 and in the opposite direction to the bottom plate 11 by the pressing portion 8.
