PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grinder capable of reducing excessive grinding after completion of the grinding. SOLUTION: The grinder is equipped with: a wheel spindle 5 rotated by an electric motor 10, which is supported without contact at a floating target position in axial and radial directions with respect to a casing 4 by a control-type axial magnetic bearing 6 and control-type radial magnetic bearings 7 and 8; and a grinding whetstone G having a grinding surface S formed on its outer peripheral surface, which is mounted on a part of the spindle 5 protruding from the casing 4. After the casing 4 is axially positioned, the casing 4 is moved in a radial incising direction to grind a part of a workpiece W. After completion of the grinding, the casing 4 is moved in a reverse incising direction. After completion of the grinding, the floating target position in the incising or reverse incising direction of the bearings 7 and 8 is changed in the more reverse incising direction from that during the grinding, and in addition, the casing 4 is rapidly moved in the reverse incising direction.
