The method involves fixing relative angular orientation of multiple rotatable members for operatively connecting a crankshaft (12) and a camshaft (26) such that one of the rotatable members is movable to vary angular position relative to another fixed rotatable member. Angular position of the movable rotatable member is adjusted to align the fixed rotatable member. The adjusted rotatable member is connected to the fixed rotatable member for common rotation to determine minimum clearance between valves (20, 22) and piston (16) when the crankshaft and the camshaft are unlocked. An independent claim is also included for an engine comprising a driveshaft.
