PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyester suitably used for a hot-melt binder fiber which can give a fiber product having good heat resistance and texture in addition to excellent adhesiveness, and a polyester obtained thereby. SOLUTION: In the method for producing a polyester by adding 1,4-butanediol to an esterified product including terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol to perform depolymerization reaction, and then adding a polycondensation catalyst to perform polycondensation reaction, a basic ammonium compound is added prior to the depolymerization reaction, and tetrahydrofuran which is generated during the reaction is 1 mass% or less to the polyester.
