The invention relates to a handheld electric power tool with a main switch and at least one safety device for enabling the function of the handheld electric power tool. It is provided that the safety device (8) has at least one capacitive switch (9) assigned to a handle (14) of the handheld electric power tool (1). The invention also relates to a method for operating a handheld electric power tool which comprises a main switch and at least one safety device interacting with the main switch for enabling the function of the handheld electric power tool. It is provided that at least one capacitive switch assigned to a handle of the handheld electric power tool is used for the safety device.
